Before the Coffee gets cold - Toshikazu Kawaguchi

This collection of 4 short stories with recurring characters was originally a play before being adapted into a book.

It is set in a cafe that can transport a person across time. Although these stories are based on time travel, it is more of a slow-burn bittersweet drama about love and relationships.

This book reminded me of Midnight Diner - which had stories with recurring characters set in a Japanese Izakaya.

Unique Attributes

This book was unique in its treatment of the concept of time travel.

  • Time-Travel is less of a sci-fi phenomenon and more of a supernatural event governed by strict rules.
  • There are no divergent timelines. Hence, a person traveling in time cannot affect the physical course of the timeline. You cannot change destiny.
  • Failure to drink the coffee before it gets cold has drastic consequences.

Because of these reasons, this cafe remains an urban legend rather than a popular destination for patrons seeking to change their lives.

Layers

The book brings about an increasing emotional intensity with each short story.

The four women in each story are emotionally affected by a decision they have made (or will have to make). It is for this reason that they seek to time-travel. Each instance does not change or affect destiny. However, it changes their character or heart and eases their emotions.

But Kazu still goes on believing that, no matter what difficulties people face, they will always have the strength to overcome them. It just takes heart. And if the chair can change someone’s heart, it clearly has its purpose.

Memorable Moments in the Book

The Lovers

Fumiko was slowly closing her bloodshot eyes when—“Three years,” Goro said with his back to her. “Please wait three years. Then I’ll return, I promise.”

Husband And Wife

“One more thing,” she said. “Starting tomorrow, no more calling me by my maiden name, okay?”

The Sisters

With red teary eyes, Kumi looked up and took a deep breath. “To run the inn together. With you,” she replied. Her face transformed into a big smile.

Mother And Child

“Mom.” She said it in a nervous, excited voice but Kei heard it clearly. Miki was calling her Mom.

“Miki...” Leaving her flowing tears unwiped, Kei gave her best smile to Miki. “Thank you, for the honor of having you.”
